Entering its 50th anniversary this year, Earth Day 2020 will go digital for the very first time on April 22. While we cannot gather together to celebrate this milestone due to the coronavirus pandemic, there’s so much we can do from the safety of our home to support the environmental movement. In keeping with Earth Day 2020’s theme of climate action, here are seven actions to take in celebration of the green holiday:

Reduce your carbon footprint

Help reduce your carbon footprint by having eco-friendly habits like walking to your nearest grocery store. Image:

While most of us may not be staying at home by choice, we could use this opportunity to reassess our carbon footprint and make note of our new, eco-friendly habits.

As we stay at home and social distance to control the spread of coronavirus, Zoom, FaceTime and live-streamed videos have become part of our everyday life. We’re no longer travelling for holiday, to conferences or even the grocery store unless completely necessary.

Lucky for us, we can now get up close and personal to some of the most majestic wild animals without air travel with virtual safari, created by luxury African conservation and safari operator Singita. Surround yourself in the peaceful African bush with “Sounds of Singita” or let Singita’s experienced safari guide to take you on a virtual game drive. Follow Singita's Facebook and Instagram for regular updates from its lodges across 6 regions in Africa.

Virgin Limited Edition has also created a weekly real-time safari experience that showcases live videos of South Africa’s wildlife from Ulusaba Private Game Reserve. Follow @VirginLimitedEdition to tune in to their Instagram Live every Monday at 3:30pm BST.

Download the Earth Challenge 2020 app

Ever thought you could contribute to science research and help promote better environmental policies through a mobile app?

Take part in the world’s largest citizen science initiative by downloading the Earth Challenge 2020 app on your Android or iOS devices, which enables you to collect data on air quality and plastic pollution near you.

The resulting database—of over one billion data points—will be displayed on a public map and made available as open data for researchers to use.

Buy in bulk

One of the easiest ways to do our part in reducing plastic waste on a daily basis is through shopping packaging-free bulk foods. Hong Kong zero waste stores such as Live Zero, Slowood or Edgar offer a wide variety of household goods, organic pantry staples and even beauty products to be bought in bulk.

All you need is your own containers to store the dry goods, or purchase one of the donated containers to begin a plastic-free lifestyle.

Go plant-based

If going straight into a vegetarian or vegan diet sounds a bit intimidating, consider trying plant-based meat.

Throughout April, Impossible Foods is collaborating with Hong Kong restaurants to create limited-edition dishes to celebrate Earth Day, including spicy Impossible Sichuan Burger by Beef & Liberty, Sichuan Style Dan Dan Noodles by MO Bar, Impossible Earth Bao by Little Bao and more.

On Earth Day (April 22), customers who order an Impossible dish at any of the key participating restaurants will receive exclusive merchandise like tote bags, reusable cutlery and socks.

Use reusable items

As part of the Earth Day Network’s 22-day Earth Day Daily Challenge, the zero-waste challenge is all about changing habits.

Environmentally conscious consumption is the first step to living an eco-friendly life, so whether you decide to go for a run or grab a coffee at your favourite cafe, be sure to switch from plastic bottoms or takeaway cups to your own reusable water bottle or coffee cup.

When you go grocery shopping, bring your own reusable shopping bag to avoid stocking up plastic bags. Instead of using single-use straws and cutlery for your takeaways, bring your own containers and reusable utensils for the restaurants.

Plant trees

Planting a tree may sound like a lot of effort, but not when someone can take care of it for you! Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong has partnered up with EcoMatcher to create a new green initiative that allows guests to plant a tree by simply enjoying a delicious afternoon tea.

Each forest-inspired afternoon tea set at Clipper Lounge or Café Causette comes with a QR code for a tree. Guests are one step closer to building a greener future by travelling virtually to their tree through satellite maps on the EcoMatcher mobile app. All the information about the tree, including its precise location, the species, the carbon sequestration of the tree, and the farmer who is taking care of it are only one click away.
